Guide

How sweepstakes casinos work, explained for operators.

The sweepstakes model is a promotional structure, not a wager. This guide walks through the mechanics an operator has to run and where each one lives on a platform.

Two currencies, two jobs

Players buy Gold Coins to play. Gold Coins have no redemption value; they are the entertainment currency. Sweeps Coins are the promotional currency: players receive them as a bonus with purchases, through promotions and through the no-purchase entry routes the official rules describe, and eligible Sweeps Coin balances can be redeemed for prizes under the brand's redemption policy. Many brands also run a bonus balance that is spent before the paid one. A platform has to keep these balances separate, auditable and scoped to one brand.

Entry: purchase and no-purchase routes

The defining feature of the model is that no purchase is necessary to enter. Operators offer alternative routes such as mail-in requests, daily claims, sign-up credits or promotions. The routes, their limits and their wording are defined in the official sweepstakes rules written with counsel. On a platform the operator configures the routes per brand and the ledger records every Sweeps Coin credit with its source, so the rules can be evidenced.

Redemption, KYC and review

Redemption is where most of the operational risk sits. A request should show identity status, document review and a timeline in one place; staff approve and dispatch, or reject with a refund that is atomic with the wallet. Thresholds, reviewers and anti-money-laundering policy are the operator's decisions; the platform's job is to make them enforceable and auditable.

Player protection and geography

  • Geo rules per brand, with a blocked-region page; which regions are excluded is the operator's decision.
  • Self-exclusion as a profile control, a block modal and a restricted route.
  • Account bans checked at the API layer on every state-changing call, one active session per account, MFA and passkeys.
  • Per-brand legal pages: terms, privacy, sweepstakes rules, redemption policy and responsible play.

Skill versus chance

Sweepstakes brands most often run games of chance. A skill-games brand decides outcomes by player performance on a board every player can be given identically. On iPlaySkillz that means a seeded RNG, signed sessions settled once on the server, and score rules that can reject implausible results. Whether a title is treated as skill or chance in a given market is a legal question; a platform that documents the mechanics gives counsel the evidence to answer it.

What a platform enforces, and what stays with you

  1. Platform

Separate currencies on an append-only ledger, configurable entry routes, redemption review with KYC, geo rules, self-exclusion, bans, session enforcement, audit trails and per-brand legal pages.

  2. Operator

The markets you enter, the official sweepstakes rules and their legal review, KYC and anti-money-laundering thresholds, age and identity verification beyond signup, marketing claims and redemption terms.
